Mykonos Town — Chora to the locals — is one of the most beautiful settlements in the Cyclades. Its whitewashed cubic houses, bougainvillea-draped alleyways, and Venetian-influenced architecture have been drawing visitors for centuries. Here is how to explore it properly.

When to Go

Early morning and late evening are when Chora belongs to those who know it. Before 9am, the streets are quiet, the light is extraordinary, and you can photograph the windmills and Little Venice without a crowd. After 9pm, the town transforms — restaurants fill, music spills from open windows, and the alleyways glow with candlelight. Midday in peak season is best avoided.

The Windmills

The seven windmills of Kato Mili are Mykonos’ most iconic image. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century to mill wheat, they stand on a hill above the harbour and frame perfect sunset views. Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset for the best light and the most vivid colours.

Little Venice

The neighbourhood of Alefkandra — universally known as Little Venice — lines the western waterfront with old sea captains’ houses whose balconies hang directly over the Aegean. Walk along the water’s edge in the late afternoon and you will understand immediately why this corner of the island became famous.

Getting Lost on Purpose

The streets of Chora were designed to confuse — the labyrinthine layout was intended to disorient pirates. Leave the main shopping drag of Matogianni and walk into the residential backstreets. You will find tiny whitewashed churches, cats sleeping in the sun, bougainvillea over every wall, and the occasional family taverna that has not yet appeared on any app.

Practical Notes

Chora is entirely pedestrianised. Park below the windmills and walk in. Comfortable shoes are essential — the streets are uneven stone. Most shops open late and stay open until midnight in summer. A thorough wander takes two to three hours.

From Prima Donna, Chora is approximately eight minutes by car. We recommend evening visits for dinner. Ask our team for the best current restaurant recommendations and we will arrange a table.
